ALTAMONT – Illinois will remove its 1% grocery tax in January 2026. Municipalities will have the authority to replace that tax, which is what the Altamont City council recently discussed and plans to do. Instead of the tax money going to the state, it will be going back into the city’s general fund. “It’ll just shift,” said City Clerk Sarah Stephen.

A Teutopolis man and an Ohio man were pronounced dead after separate vehicle crashes on May 26: One on Interstate 70 seven miles west of Greenup, and another on Moccasin Road north of Altamont. A three-vehicle accident on I-70 occurred at approximately 1:03 p.m. According to Illinois State Police Trooper Jayme Bufford, one person was pronounced dead and one with injuries was flown to a regional hospital.

DIETERICH – Ruthie Welty, a 78-year-old U.S. Army veteran, was the guest speaker during Dieterich’s Memorial Day commemoration. Welty met a recruiter during college and served from 1966 to 1968 doing top-secret cryptography. Heartville resident Richard Raber has been exploring caves since 1960. He wanted to end his cave exploration career on his 85th birthday in the same cave he started it in: Rollins Number 2 near Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.He had visited the cave 13 times over 65 years, partly to map the cave. During his final trip, he simply wanted to enjoy the journey.

Altamont’s Veterans of Foreign Wars marked its 75th anniversary on May 11. The state of Illinois sent the group a certificate marking the commemoration. World War II veteran Bill Wendling, 98, is the group’s only surviving founding member.
