In an earlier column I mentioned that my Lenten reading included “Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton for Lent and Easter.” This booklet contains not only selected excerpts from Merton’s writings but also sections labeled “Another Voice,” which are by various people, including Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Paul and several theologians I’d never heard of before.

PRICE — More than 200 people attended a Mass of healing at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church in Price on April 5. The day opened with the recitation of the rosary, followed by Mass. Those attending also had the opportunity to venerate relics of several saints, including Pius X, Thérèse of the Child Jesus (The Little Flower), Elizabeth Ann Seton, Meinrad of Einsiedeln and St. John Henry Newman, as well as a piece of the True Cross.

On Saturday I started the morning certain I would soon reap a multitude of spiritual benefits. My destination was the Mass of healing at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Price. The church also is a pilgrimage site designated by Bishop Oscar A. Solis for the Jubilee Year of Hope, so I figured I’d receive healing from the Mass, and also the benefits of the plenary indulgence for the pilgrimage.

HOLLADAY — In an historic ceremony on March 29, the Utah Knights of Columbus celebrated the international fraternal organization’s 125th anniversary of their Fourth Degree, the highest level of their order. The Knights of Columbus was founded in Connecticut in 1882 by Father Michael McGivney. At first there were three degree levels based on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The fourth level, patriotism, was added in 1900.

BOUNTIFUL — The installation of a stained-glass window of their patron saint has brought the Great Room of Saint Olaf Catholic School in Bountiful one step closer to being completely finished. The Great Room, part of the 16,000-square-foot expansion of the school that was dedicated last March, serves as a cafeteria for the students as well as a venue for school functions and parish events. The renovation also included four classrooms, offices and new restrooms for students and staff.

Among my Lenten reading this year is a little booklet called “Bridges to Contemplative Living with Thomas Merton,” published by Ave Maria Press in 2009. It has provided much material for reflection. What first caught my attention was the epigraph, which reads in part, “It is necessary that, at the beginning of this fast, the Lord should show Himself to us in His mercy. The purpose of Lent is not only expiation, to satisfy the divine justice, but above all is a preparation to rejoice in His love.

This past weekend was fruitful spiritually, with the Lenten retreat on Saturday introducing me to a new term and the Gospel reading for Sunday giving me much food for contemplation. During the retreat, Dominican Father Gabriel Mosher spoke of the “semen gloriae,” a term I had never heard before.
