One thing I love about Jimin Han’s work is her ability to create very different work depending on the story she wants to tell. Her first novel, A Small Revolution, took on a lot of serious themes, including historical ones and uses a complex, experimental, fragmented structure. The Apology (just released in paperback!) is historical in a sense, but also has ghosts, intergenerational trauma, but is also funny — almost lighthearted if you can imagine that.

How did you come to author your life? I was desperate to better understand my relationship with my mother. She died when I was 25 and I thought if I untangled us, I could move on. Ironically, my problem first began in a library. The school library of my elementary school. The only kid of color in my rural northern Minnesota school — and a bookish nerd, the library had become a space of solace and sanctuary. Where I could not only mentally disappear into books, but also retreat from the gangs of kids calling me c-ink, because they had to be quiet, here. Besides reading, my other love was horses.
