Marie Myung-Ok Lee·FollowPublished inAsian American Book Club·3 min read·--Photo by lilartsy on UnsplashWriting can be a competitive sport because, well, it’s so competitive. Especially now with declining readership, competition from other platforms, and of course our non-friend AI (n.b. I found out recently 2 of my novels were used without my consent to help train AI). But even worse is how social media, whether intended or not, put us in direct competition.

One thing I love about Jimin Han’s work is her ability to create very different work depending on the story she wants to tell. Her first novel, A Small Revolution, took on a lot of serious themes, including historical ones and uses a complex, experimental, fragmented structure. The Apology (just released in paperback!) is historical in a sense, but also has ghosts, intergenerational trauma, but is also funny — almost lighthearted if you can imagine that.
