A call has been made for Ireland’s media regulator to rectify its “big mistake” in removing measures to deal with “recommender algorithms” that continually feed toxic material to children, from its online safety code. Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore made the call as she highlighted the Online Safety Monitor, a report by the Children’s Rights Alliance which warned about a lack of regulation online.

Former minister for health Stephen Donnelly was informed a year ago about reports that children had undergone unnecessary hip operations but the families were notified only in the past week, the Dáil has heard. Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty also said that thousands of children could be affected “because we’ve been contacted by parents whose children’s cases reach back a decade and further”.

Nikita Clark is forced to use a walker and wheelchair to get around because of the “horrific amounts of pain” she suffers, and she will have to travel to Romania to get the care she requires, politicians were told.

Legislation introduced to prevent weapons for Israel transiting through Ireland or Irish airspace puts a “legal obligation on the State to do something that it can’t actually do”, Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien has said. A teenager who had been weaned off drugs through treatment for his addition was held to the ground and injected by a “gang of thugs” when he later refused to buy drugs from them, the Dáil has heard. Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe said the young person, who was not yet 18, “had gone through the whole addiction services”. The Clare TD said that “when someone is treated for drug addiction they remove themselves from the sales market. A client is gone, a sales base is gone”.

The Government has been challenged to “flex some legal muscle” to force religious orders involved in mother and baby homes to contribute to redress for survivors of the institutions. Social Democrats acting leader Cian O’Callaghan alleged these congregations had “operated as criminal networks” as he accused the Government of continuing to “roll over” after years of being ignored when trying to get them to pay.

When the US tariffs are announced the most important thing is for everybody in Ireland and the EU to “stay calm and measured”, Tánaiste Simon Harris has said. The Government will have to work through the detail after the Trump administration’s headline announcement, he told the Dáil late on Tuesday night in advance of Wednesday’s expected tariffs.
