In 2024, it’s not uncommon to hear about the importance of raising children to thrive in an increasingly global society. If we take this to mean that part of a child’s learning journey should encompass an education around nations, cultures, languages, and experiences beyond their own, alongside an appreciation for their unique heritage, the sentiment is unequivocally sound.

In the 1990s, I was a first-generation Colombian-American kid growing up in the New Jersey suburbs. The town, at the time, was over 90% Caucasian, and besides my mother and older brother, I only knew one other Latine member in the community (a dear friend’s stepfather).

I still remember one of my very first sleepovers. I was 9 and a girl one year my senior moved into a house down the street of my Jersey Shore suburb. We bonded instantly—both of us chunky, curly-haired, anxious, and nerdy. We spent an inseparable first summer together, playing basketball on the street, annoying her little brothers, and having countless barbecues in her backyard. I loved spending time in her home.

Before there were as many plus-size clothing brands available to shop on e-shelves as there are in 2023, we fat babes had very few options when it came to our aesthetic self-expression. There is only so much one can do when relegated to the ill-fitting boot-cut jean and occasionally rhinestoned tunic top section of the local department store. Many of us turned to beauty as a way of experimenting with our looks instead.
