La semana pasada, del 8 al 10 de abril, la Canadian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) organizó su convención y feria anual. Este año le tocó el turno a Montreal. Más de 325 empresas expusieron sus productos en una feria que agotó todas las entradas, y el centenario de la CPMA hizo que el evento fuera muy especial. "Fue estupendo reunirnos con nuestros amigos de Canadá", afirma Danelle Huber, de CMI Orchards.

More than 325 companies exhibited on a sold-out trade show floor and CPMA's 100th anniversary made the event extra special. The conference center, The Palais des congrès, is located at the north end of Old Montreal with hotels and restaurants all being in walking distance. Not all attendees were prepared to walk the cold weather and snow, forcing some to go out and buy winter jackets.

Yesterday, April 10, CPMA exhibitors and attendees came back to the trade show floor one more time before the doors closed at 4:30 pm. Exhibitors were content, but consistently shared it was less busy compared to the first day. While this is not uncommon, this year, many members of the produce industry were busier than usual due to Viva Fresh's trade show following right after CPMA's event. A share of attendees left the trade show early to fly to Houston, TX.

South Carolina peach growers need a better year this year. "In 2023, total crop volume was about 10 percent of a normal crop due to a mid-March freeze," says Jimmy Forrest with Dixie Belle Peaches. The trees began to bud early but when temperatures plummeted to freezing, the buds were killed. Although growers in the state are hopeful for a full and bountiful crop this year, it is still too early to discuss a forecast. In a normal year, Dixie Belle produces about 750,000 half bushel boxes of peaches.

The start of the California avocado season always creates excitement as the fruit is available for a limited amount of time. "For us, California avocado harvest started this past Monday," says Hayden McIntyre, a third generation Farm Manager, overseeing avocado and citrus operations in California. For the most part, he manages avocado farms for different clients, but his company also has their own groves, operating under Sierra Pacific Farms.

Blackberries are the number one item for H52, grower of different berry varieties in Mexico. The company's name stands for Harvest 52, representing a 52-week supply of berries. "During the 2023-2024 season, we will achieve year-round blackberry supply with our customers in the US and the EU," says the company's Esli Recinos. "It is not an easy task as many factors can affect the production in the fields." This past fall and winter, blackberry production was affected by El Niño.
