The clinical syndrome of heart failure (HF), encompassing a constellation of signs and symptoms, has been recognized for more than a century. The incremental steps over the past 100 years—discoveries from basic research, the use of investigational drugs, pivotal clinical trials—often have been indiscernible. Nevertheless, the century has witnessed a reduction in morbidity and mortality rates for this large group of patients.
