Filmes que expressam ambivalência sobre a idealização da maternidade/paternidade deixaram de ser tabu ao longo dos anos. No caso de Canina, longa baseado no romance de mesmo nome de Rachel Yoder, estes sentimentos ganham contornos fantásticos para expressar, em alegorias, os lados bom e ruim desta "fase" da vida. O mais curioso e, talvez, a maior virtude de Canina é ser um filme que não busca idealizar demais a maternidade nem desmistificar de menos.
