David Richard-Imagn Images Welcome to Pounding the Rock’s 2024-25 player reviews! The series will look at the players who finished the season with the San Antonio Spurs on guaranteed contracts and who played consequential minutes and/or a vital role (so no two-way players because we hardly saw them this year, and no players who were traded away).

Troy Wayrynen-Imagn Images Marilyn Dubinski: I’ll give them a 7, with context. If you were told coming into the season that Victor Webmanyama would only appear in 46 games, and they would all come in the first “half” of the season, you probably wouldn’t have guessed they’d still come within a game of their preseason Vegas predictions with 34 wins.

Rob Gray-Imagn Images A lot was lost when Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the 2024-25 season during the All-Star break due to deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder, and it wasn’t just potential wins for a Spurs team that had postseason aspirations. With just 46 games played, he was deemed ineligible for awards such Defensive Player of the Year (which by all accounts he would have won had he qualified), as well as All-NBA and All-Defensive teams because he did not meet 65-game threshold.

At first, it looked like it wasn’t going to happen, with the Raptors shooting red hot in the first half while the Spurs were sloppy and indecisive.

Well Castle may have outdone him by missing a wide open dunk 😅

What an awful couple of possessions by Blake Wesley to end that third quarter. Missed two point-blank layups and turned it over attempting a behind the back dribble, which Donovan Mitchell nearly converted to a buzzer-beating three from midcourt.

The Spurs benefited from a couple of Cavs flagrants and two successful challenges on pretty obvious bad calls, but otherwise it has felt like the Cavs have been allowed to play much more physical than SA.
