Federal Arts Minister Tony Burke says he was not briefed about some of Khaled Sabsabi's early artworks when the artist was chosen to represent Australia at the 2026 Venice Biennale, together with curator Michael Dagostino. Creative Australia rescinded its invitation to the artistic team last week after questions were raised in Parliament by shadow arts minister Clare Chandler, on the merits of their selection for the Biennale.

The Palestinian Authority's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Varsen Aghabekian, is urging the Australian government to explicitly reject President Donald Trump's proposal for the US to "own" the Gaza Strip and force the resettlement of its civilian population to other countries. "We want to have Australia and all other countries who are for international law and who want a world order … to stand tall and say that this is not acceptable.

ASIO head, Mike Burgess, says he may soon use powers to compel tech companies to cooperate with warrants and unlock encrypted chats to aid in national security investigations. "If you actually break the law or you're a threat to security, you lose your right to privacy, and what I've been asking for those companies that build messaging apps (is to) respond to the lawful requests. So when I have a warrant you give me access to that communication," Mr Burgess told 7.30.

Head of ASIO Mike Burgess says his comments on the vetting process for people fleeing Gaza were misrepresented, as a political storm raged over the issue of visas being offered to people trying to leave the war zone. "I've watched with interest over the last couple of weeks how people have chosen to distort what I said," the ASIO director-general told 7.30.
