1 INTRODUCTION The Indo-Pacific realm is composed of many islands (Briggs, 1974), and it is considered as the largest biogeographic region in the world with several biodiversity hotspots (Mittermeier et al., 2011). Islands of the Indo-Pacific are characterized by freshwater ecosystems that are subject to significant climatic and hydrological fluctuations through time, such as droughts, cyclones, or flood episodes (Gordon, 2003).
