Nobody knows the full extent of bike theft within the UK, as many, perhaps most, bike and component thefts go unreported to the police and therefore do not appear in official crime statistics. However, according to these figures compiled by the Liberal Democrat party, in England and Wales from 2017 to 2021 there were 441,000 bike crimes recorded of which 89% went unsolved, with only 2.25% of the perpetrators charged.
