Two former Batesville Pioneer baseball players are making their marks as their respective college teams prepare for NCAA Super Regional play. Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood and Murray State shortstop Conner Cunningham will both be playing in the Super Regionals this weekend. Wood, a starting pitcher for the Razorbacks and a 2022 graduate of Batesville High School, struck out 13 Creighton batters over six innings of work as Arkansas beat the Blue Jays 8-3 on Sunday to win the Fayetteville Regional.

The last few weeks have been very busy for me. And I love it that way. It means I’m covering state title games. Covering a state championship game has always been the pinnacle for me when it comes to sports writing and photography. Baseball and softball games, as well as soccer, can come down to the very end. For the first time in five years, I didn’t have a soccer game to cover, but two of the three diamond games I covered came down to the wire. kAm~?

BENTON — A pitcher’s duel broke out in the Class 2A state championship baseball game Wednesday at the Benton Athletic Center between the Cedar Ridge Timberwolves and the Riverside Rebels. The Rebels scored a run in the top of the eighth to beat the Timberwolves 1-0 to win the state championship for the first time in school history. Cedar Ridge had never been to the finals either. The game was scoreless after seven innings. Cedar Ridge pitcher Aiden Jones gave up only six hits through seven innings.
