As the profession continues to grow and patient needs evolve, the role of the optometrist as the primary eyecare provider adopts new contexts and responsibilities. Stagnation in the ophthalmology workforce coupled with a rise in age-related eye disease means it now falls to optometrists to take on more specialty care. For the profession overall and individual ODs personally, it’s both an obligation and an opportunity. Specialization allows practitioners to offer more targeted management.
