Voters indicate the economy is an important consideration. I want to share my concerns about Donald Trump’s economic platform. The centerpiece of Trump’s economic plan is to increase tariffs and extend expiring tax cuts. According to the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Trump’s proposed tariffs amount to a $2,600 tax on the median household. The bottom 20% of households would lose 6% of their purchasing power.

While dry weather will likely result in less than robust local fall color, the season of fall outdoor youth field days has indeed been robust. Extension staff have been out helping with a number of our own hosted field days as well as providing assistance to neighboring counties. The cooperation for these efforts are wonderful as staff from SWCDs, Extension, parks, DNR, USDA and others all come together to help out. The smell of fall leaves and harvest has its appeal.

For the 81st consecutive year, millions of youths, parents, volunteers and alumni across the country will celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 7-12. This years theme, Beyond Ready, is a theme that reiterates the importance of 4-H in the lives of young people to develop strong life skills, career development and interpersonal skills. Youth success time and again has as a number one criterion for youth to have a caring adult who continually invests in their livelihood.

Huge, life-defining decisions are in play when one begins to plan and consider post-high school education. There are many options and choices that families have for consideration. Doing nothing or making no plans is a decision. Ideally, one would want to be the most informed possible to make sound and wise decisions. For many in primary or elementary school, post-high school is far off in considering the future.
