My first trip to Key West was almost my last. My wife and I were newlyweds. We didn’t have much money. We could barely afford the gas for the drive down US 1 to Key West from our home in Cooper City. But we fell in love with the Overseas Highway – one of the most beautiful drives in the world – and, before we knew it, we’d gone all the way to the end of US 1. We parked by the water and watched the sun go down from the pier on Mallory Square, like everyone else in Key West.

Explore Florida & the Caribbean, the magazine’s travel issue in collaboration with the Orlando Sentinel, won first place in the Niche Site/App category from the Florida Society of News Editors; and first place in the Special Sections category from the Florida Press Club.

I don’t like what’s happened to light. You know, light, as in “let it shine on you,” “trip fantastic” and “let there be’’ light. That light. Because something has happened to light – or at least lighting – over the past few years. I remember flying home and seeing miles of amber lights glowing up from South Florida through the window of the plane. It looked soft and welcoming down there. Like home.
