    SAN FRANCISCO—To union cheers, in the biggest legal challenge to Donald Trump’s and Elon Musk’s wholesale firings of federal workers and closure of programs and agencies, a federal judge in San Francisco banned the firings for two weeks. Senior Judge Susan Illston told both sides—including unions who led the fight–to be in court on May 22 to argue if the ban should be permanent.

    If the MAGA Republicans ram through their budget this week under a “reconciliation” plan millions will lose Medicaid coverage and, by coming at it through a back door, the bill would, in effect, maim if not kill the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. Medicaid funds they plan to cut make Obamacare available to millions across the country. Only after they are very sick people kicked off health care plans will go to emergency rooms for inadequate care. Many will die.

    WASHINGTON –  Essential Workers For Democracy (EW4D) is launching a campaign to bring one-member-one-vote elections—among other reforms—to one of the nation’s largest unions, the United Food and Commercial Workers. The immediate catalyst for their meeting in early May via Zoom was the expected retirement, midway through his term, of current President Marc Perrone, and a meeting, scheduled for May 13-14, by the union’s 55-person Executive Board, to approve his successor.

    WASHINGTON—The Letter Carriers have big doubts about the commitment to the U.S. Postal Service of David Steiner to be the nation’s next Postmaster General. Steiner is a rich corporate executive and a board member of FedEx, a top competitor of the USPS. The White House has yet to officially confirm sending Steiner’s name to the USPS board, which holds its quarterly meeting on May 9, with the acting Postmaster General presenting the latest financial report.
