SOMETHING is not right with our officials at the moment. Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts’ first-half challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta was a clear red card for serious foul play. The Crystal Palace striker was kicked in the head and it was an obvious instance of endangering a player’s safety with excessive force and/or brutality. Yet, referee Michael Oliver did not even show a yellow card. We had to wait for VAR to intervene and recommend a review.

FORMER Premier League whistler Mark Halsey has branded VAR "embarrassing" following Everton's 2-2 draw with Manchester United. The Toffees were denied a last-gasp penalty after a controversial VAR intervention on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Young went down in the box following a shirt pull from Matthijs De Ligt, with referee Andy Madley initially pointing to the spot. VAR Matt Donohue recommended Madley review his decision - before the WRONG footage was shown on the pitchside monitor.

FOOTBALL life without VAR is bearable. More than that - by all the evidence from the FA Cup so far, it is a reasonable proposition. One incident in particular provides support for this view. It occurred when Birmingham goalkeeper Bailey Peacock- Farrell beat away a shot from Newcastle’s Joe Willock on or beyond the goal-line.

Life in FOOTBALL without VAR is certainly manageable. Moreover, based on the evidence from the FA Cup to date, it’s quite a reasonable assertion. One specific event illustrates this perspective clearly. It happened when Birmingham goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell deflected a shot from Newcastle’s Joe Willock just on or beyond the goal-line.

By Mark Halsey VAR Darren England should have recommended a review as soon as referee Michael Oliver showed Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly a straight red card for his challenge on Wolves' Matt Doherty. An official must decide whether the challenge was careless or reckless—a careless challenge results in only a free kick, a reckless challenge warrants a yellow card—or worthy of a red card.
