EVANILSON should never have received a red card against Manchester United. The Bournemouth striker slipped when he challenged Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui in the 70th minute of Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw. Ref Peter Bankes gave a yellow card to the Brazilian — and that was the correct call, as Evanilson’s slip turned his tackle into a reckless one. It was not serious foul play. Why on earth did VAR John Brooks get involved?

SOMETHING is not right with our officials at the moment. Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts’ first-half challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta was a clear red card for serious foul play. The Crystal Palace striker was kicked in the head and it was an obvious instance of endangering a player’s safety with excessive force and/or brutality. Yet, referee Michael Oliver did not even show a yellow card. We had to wait for VAR to intervene and recommend a review.

FORMER Premier League whistler Mark Halsey has branded VAR "embarrassing" following Everton's 2-2 draw with Manchester United. The Toffees were denied a last-gasp penalty after a controversial VAR intervention on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Young went down in the box following a shirt pull from Matthijs De Ligt, with referee Andy Madley initially pointing to the spot. VAR Matt Donohue recommended Madley review his decision - before the WRONG footage was shown on the pitchside monitor.

FOOTBALL life without VAR is bearable. More than that - by all the evidence from the FA Cup so far, it is a reasonable proposition. One incident in particular provides support for this view. It occurred when Birmingham goalkeeper Bailey Peacock- Farrell beat away a shot from Newcastle’s Joe Willock on or beyond the goal-line.

Life in FOOTBALL without VAR is certainly manageable. Moreover, based on the evidence from the FA Cup to date, it’s quite a reasonable assertion. One specific event illustrates this perspective clearly. It happened when Birmingham goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell deflected a shot from Newcastle’s Joe Willock just on or beyond the goal-line.
