Many people at high risk of lung cancer aren’t screened until age 65, the age when Medicare coverage begins for most people, even though current recommendations call for screening to begin at age 50 for high-risk people, according to research led by a University of Colorado Cancer Center member.

University of Colorado Cancer Center researchers have teamed up on a multi-year search for better ways to target the malignant blood-forming stem cells that give rise to a spectrum of blood cancers called myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). These malignancies remain challenging to treat, with limited clinical options that are rarely curative for patients. Eric Pietras, PhD, is an associate professor in the CU Department of Medicine’s Division of Hematology and its associate chief of basic research.

A new program of the University of Colorado Department of Medicine enlists generous senior faculty to help support the research of promising junior faculty. One of the first beneficiaries of the Department of Medicine Scholars Program is Alfredo Ornelas Sanchez, PhD, who was a post-doctoral fellow in the lab of his benefactor, Sean Colgan, PhD, a distinguished professor in the CU Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Ornelas is now a junior faculty member in the division.

Four University of Colorado Cancer Center members have been tapped to serve as ambassadors for its four main scientific and clinical research programs, working to coordinate and support research, training, and community engagement efforts across the four programs and the cancer center’s outreach offices serving Colorado communities. The four program liaisons were appointed in January as a new leadership cohort within the CU Cancer Center.

A few years ago, more than 14,000 hopeful students applied to be a part of the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Class of 2025, and 744 interviewed for slots in the class.
