Articles about AI risks tend to be: sensationalist tropes (the robots from the future are coming to kill us - follow me if you want to live) hype-busters (ooh, LLMs hallucinate as much as humans do) worries about bias (ooh, LLMs share the prejudices of the data they were trained on as much as humans do) However, we shouldn't get carried away by these risks to the extent we treat ML deployments as "a different category" from any other deployment.

Something that’s been on my mind a lot are Dollar General stores. As of this writing, I only just learned that my hometown of Crossville will apparently be getting itself a second Dollar General store. To be specific, a Dollar General Market. That’s what I’m told anyway by high-ranking town officials including the mayor and one of the servers at the local café.

April 15th rolls around this weekend, the day that would normally be Tax Day. This year, however, Tax Day is actually on April 18th because April 15th falls on a weekend and the next weekday is recognized as Emancipation Day in Washington, D.C.So, if you still haven’t gotten those taxes filed just yet, worry not – you still have (checks watch) time, but you might want to book that appointment with your tax preparer sooner rather than later.

Recalling my ‘closed’ prom

Something that’s been on my mind a lot lately is prom. Last weekend, I had fun shooting prom photos for a couple of local seniors. The shoot took place in Fort Payne and I noticed several others out and about getting prom pictures taken. All of this brought back memories of my own Crossville High School prom experience from many years ago. Unfortunately, pictures exist.

Last weekend, I found myself in a vinyl record store thumbing through the selections. There were two young men in there – teens, dressed in formal wear. Mustering up my best “Dad joke,” I asked them if they were planning on attending prom later or just always got so dressed up to go shopping for records. That brought a chuckle. Dad joke, successful. Yah.

March is an interesting month, a transitional one – and one, during which, we are likely to have snowfall one day and warm, Spring-like weather the next. Not a lot goes on in March, but it does bring with it the expectation of Springtime and longer, warmer days on the horizon. March is one of those months that doesn’t have a lot of “official” holidays, but does have some interesting dates.

The 30th anniversary of one of the most intense snow events ever observed in the Eastern U.S. is upon us. Also known as The Great Blizzard, the Storm of the Century and The Superstorm, it all began on March 12, 1993. Around these parts, just mention “The Blizzard” and anyone who was alive at the time will instantly know what you’re referencing. This was, of course, before the age of the Internet and before widespread use of cell phones.
Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent

Something that’s been on my mind a lot lately is Mardi Gras. We just celebrated Mardi Gras, which most people likely primarily associate with New Orleans, parades, beads, and…other things. Mardi Gras is actually a specific day – the Tuesday prior to the beginning of the penitential season of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
