We hold Dr. Ann Bradshaw in the highest esteem. Her long and distinguished career in university nursing have left their mark, especially on the history of the various changes that have taken place in the last century and the way nursing education is delivered. One of us reviewed her book The Project 2000 Nurse for Journal of Advanced Nursing in 2003, saying that it “deserves to be read widely and will serve as a ‘gold standard’ in the history of nurse education”.

During the last couple of days, I have taken time to learn a bunch of stuff. I did it after reading articles about high school students not knowing how to write. I thought “Shame on them and a pox on their teachers.” The first article I read was written by a lady who made it a point to express her dismay at the realization that students don’t even know what a gerund is. That stopped me cold. I’m not the brightest bulb in the drawer, but who is?

I read something last week that blew me away. Not literally. That would be stupid. No, it was about an odd brain defect that is scary as all get out. The mental defect is Prosopagnosia. I’m thinking it has six syllables. The brain disease prevents you from remembering the faces of people, or even your own face. Kay told me that Brad Pitt has it. He doesn’t enjoy being in a room with many people, some of whom he’s supposed to know.

For the life of me, I don’t know how I’ve survived as long as I have. I’m learning too many things that I would be perfectly happy not knowing. It reminds me of one of Bob Seger's song lyrics, “Wish I didn’t know now, what I didn’t know then.” Yes, the more I learn, the more I feel as if I’m runnin’ against the wind. Kay is the person who generated the idea for this week’s article.

Today I thought we’d talk about things we had to learn to like. I’m not talking about old TV shows, movies, or Vespas. I’m talking about consumables. You know, food and drink? -- I don’t know how “Vespas” surfaced. I probably need more coffee. Speaking of which, I got the idea about food and drink after reading an article about the advent of coffee. The coffee bean can be traced back to a million years ago. I don’t know how many humanoids, if any, were around back then, but there were coffee plants.

All of the 8.1 billion people on this planet are in some ways different. Different clothes, skin color, singing ability, food preference, language, religion, temper, favorite color… But one thing each person has in common is – wait for it -- sleep. A person cannot survive without sleep. The world record for staying awake belongs to a dead Chinese gentleman who managed to stay awake for 11 days before dying. I’m sure the record has been broken by people who forgot to keep records of their awake time.

Do you know what’s weird about this particular Easter? This year Easter falls on March 31st, and won’t do it again until 2086. Your grandchildren may witness it, but you likely won’t. On the bright side, none of your grandchildren will be expecting you to hide Easter eggs for them. Oh, and get this. Next Easter falls on April 20th. Who on earth came up with such a scheme? Easter is one of those holidays that is determined by the full moon.

Jill spent a couple of days with us last week. My kid sister is my favorite visitor. I’d appreciate it if you don’t share that with my other siblings. One of the many great things about Jill is that she never takes advantage of her welcome. We’ve had guests who would have gladly spent the month with us, had I let them. Kay has always been able to put up with much more discomfort with guests than her husband. Some guests completely ignore any hints about their leaving.

Last Sunday a dear friend of mine told me that she didn’t catch on to the beginning of my article, but did catch on to the last part. I considered it kind of her not to quit reading after the beginning. The message given to writers of any sort is to grab your reader at the very beginning. Virginia’s mom is my best example of that. I’ve mentioned how my adopted mom, Ruby Parker, would not finish one of my articles if she didn’t like the beginning of it.
