    When I realized that I wanted to photograph landscape, I walked into the woods and out back. My inspiration was what I saw there. But at another level, I had countless days and experiences in similar locations near various residences, going all the way back to those of my boyhood. A farm raised grandfather, who found time to hunt, fish, and gather wild plants all his life, had introduced me to his beloved local woods and waters when I was young. His affection for such places has lived on in me.

    In the heart of mediaeval Europe, alchemy was more than a precursor to modern chemistry; it was a spiritual quest. Alchemists, often working in tandem with apothecaries, sought to uncover the secrets of the universe. Central to their work was the belief in a 'spirit' or 'essence' present in all things – distillation became their tool of choice. By heating a substance, its 'spirit' would ascend as vapour, only to be captured and condensed back into a liquid.

    The founders of Ireland's Rademon Estate Distillery have launched a whiskey company paying homage to Belfast's former whiskey bonders and blenders. David and Fiona Boyd-Armstrong established a distillery on their family's Rademon Estate near Downpatrick in 2012 and now produce the Shortcross Gin and Shortcross Irish Whiskey brands. Their new project is the Irish Whiskey Bonding Company (IWBC), which they say is a way to honour the historic whiskey bonding and blending traditions in nearby Belfast.
