IntroductionSpending on hospital care in the United States has increased by almost 60% over the past decade (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2021a). In 2020, it reached a total of 1.3 trillion, accounting for 31% of national health care expenditure and 6% of GDP (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2021b).
