For me, the Florida year divides neatly in two: hurricane season and normal season. I prefer the normal season, though I always remind people it’s only normal by Florida standards. We had a preview heat wave in May, and then on June 1, you can begin checking your weather apps for distant tropical waves that might intensify into storms that might head this way. Or not. Our part of the Caribbean has lately become more hurricany, so I’m more nervous at the season’s opener.

Tallahassee is not given to Washington-style government-shutdown drama, but this year feels different. This is the first time the Legislature didn’t pass a budget on time since, well, last time, which was in 2022. But then, it only took a one-day extension to pass a budget. The last real budget impasse was in 2015 when a 20-day special session was needed to produce a budget. Because a new fiscal year dawns each July 1, failure to enact a budget by June 30 would create a state government shutdown.
