It was during the first of last week's Manchester mind-numbingly dull derby that my brain started to drift away from events at Old Trafford towards next season and whether there was the potential for a massive title shock, even before pundit Gary Neville led a discussion on the drop in entertainment being served up in the Premier League.

Greek-born philosophers might not be all they are cracked up to be. Ange Postecoglou, fiercely proud of his Greek roots, promised a bold approach when he arrived at Tottenham and the early vibes hinted at a bright future. Even his first defeat was seen as a moral victory, as the nine men of Spurs boldly defended on the halfway line against Chelsea. They lost 4-1 but won hearts and Big Ange – as we had to call him back then – was serenaded by the defiant Spurs supporters.

The relentless nature of football means followers of the game can find it difficult to concentrate on other sports in a normal week but the international fixtures and break from the constant club action allows a brief and welcome foray into something a little different. I managed to catch most of Kyren Wilson's nail-biting 10-9 win over Judd Trump in the Players Championship snooker where the loser bemoaned a light cue ball which apparently took off "like a ping-pong ball".

There has been much debate as to whether this season has shown that Pep Guardiola's style of football is on the way out. Guardiola himself claimed that Bournemouth, Brighton and Newcastle were the "future of football" and it will be interesting to see whether the soon-to-be dethroned champions can bounce back to something like their best next season.
