DALLAS - Dustin Brown laughed at the question, at the very idea of it, at the possibility that a reporter could have such a limited understanding of the game of hockey, of the nature of the Stanley Cup playoffs. During the 2014 Western Conference final, the Los Angeles captain - who was in the midst of playing 64 extra games in a 26-month span - was asked why his Kings were so impressive in the postseason, but so ordinary in the regular season.

DALLAS - Casey DeSmith, his legs already splayed in the crease, was fighting with all he had. There was no way he was giving up on this play, no matter how many Edmonton Oilers bodies were converging on him. With Adam Henrique on the doorstep, DeSmith made a dramatic and downright balletic move to stop him - flinging his left arm behind him for balance and furiously stabbing the right side of the crease with his right pad. His head was on a swivel, looking left and right, right and left.

DALLAS - Improbably, almost impossibly, the Dallas Stars had scratched and clawed their way back into Game 5 of the Western Conference final. They had shockingly benched their all-world goaltender, Jake Oettinger, after two quick goals. They had fallen behind by three goals 58 seconds after that. They had looked overwhelmed, overmatched and, well, over. But then Jason Robertson scored for Dallas, and American Airlines Center had a pulse again.

DALLAS - The sight of Roope Hintz, Dallas' No. 1 center, being carefully carried down the hallway to the locker room, putting no weight on his left foot, understandably incensed the Stars during Game 2 of the Western Conference final on Friday night. That Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse got a two-minute penalty for the slash that led to that scene only made it worse.

DALLAS - Connor McDavid was stalking in the defensive zone, waiting for an outlet pass, a chance to make a break for it - menacing even from 150 feet away. When Jake Walman got the puck with time and space in the corner, McDavid made himself available while skating backward toward the neutral zone - still faster than half the guys on the ice. Walman, bewilderingly, sent the puck elsewhere.
