The Annandale Private Boarding House at 194 Smith Street was a well-known fixture in Durban for over 50 years. Originally a private home, it was converted into a small boarding house in about 1900. After the conclusion of the Anglo-Boer War in 1902, it was taken over by Mrs H Wright who was born and educated in Scotland. She named it Annandale after the district of Dumfriesshire in Scotland centred on the dale of the Annan river.
