On Judge David O. Carter and his work at Skid Row, Newsom called his approach challenging, but did say “At the end of the day, it’s about accountability and performance, and I think that is the spirit of what the judge was after.”

Newsom said the state is working to do more for individuals experiencing homelessness. “There’s no compassion in stepping over someone on the street.”

This is the governor’s third event today. He did similar events in Richmond and Fresno today.

“It’s not just about litter, it’s about beautification,” Newsom said. “We want to beautify the space.”

“I don’t care if you’re Democrat, Republican, rich or poor, we all express the same frustration when we drive around the state and see garbage in the streets,” Newsom said.
