Zips was one out shy of a two-hit shutout, but the right-hander was pulled after walking leadoff hitter Jason Riley with Jaxon Chaco already on base and Matai Anzaldua coming to the plate. Miller | Herald staff writer HARKER HEIGHTS - Cedar Hill's Monte Dismuke tossed a one-hit shutout and the Longhorns beat Harker Heights 6-0 on Saturday to win their Class 6A-Division II first-round playoff series. Dismuke allowed just three baserunners and needed only 82 pitches to send Cedar Hill into an area-round matchup next week against Royce City. Copperas Cove freshman Janell Gray tossed a two-hit shutout in her postseason debut and the Lady Dawgs needed only about 75 minutes to cruise to a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings over Mesquite in Game 1 of their Class 6A-Division II best-of-3 bi-district series on Friday in Ennis. The Lady Dawgs (17-8) will return to Ennis on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Game 2. Game 3, if necessary, will follow. The winner advances to face second-ranked Forney (28-1-1) in the second round next week.

Mac Uschan doubled and drove in three runs and the Harker Heights softball team returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence with a 6-4 victory at Shoemaker on Tuesday night. Brianna Warriner homered and drove in another run with a single for the Lady Knights (19-9, 6-5 District 12-6A), who finished 2-10 in district play a year ago. Gabrielle Simmons hit an RBI double and pitched the final three innings in relief of starter Janelly Rios.
