When Charles Glenn Mealer of Cartecay was inducted into the U.S. Army on October 10, 1944, he had no way of knowing he had only a few short months to live. In fact, just five weeks after embarking to the European Theater of World War II, he would be killed while crossing the Rhine River in Germany on March 25, 1945 – 80 years ago this week. It had been an abrupt tour of duty, according to a boyhood friend of one of Mealer’s brothers.
