Recently I was watching a couple of movies from the 1970s; one was a drama filmed in New York City and the other was a documentary filmed in California. There were plenty of random shots of people in streets as well as crowds at various events throughout both. However, one thing about both movies that I found so visually striking – aside from the classic cars of the time, the fashions, and, of course, the hairstyles – was the fact that everyone was so utterly thin.

I was born and raised in Peru and attended Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, an excellent medical school. I can’t complain much about my medical training; it provided me with significant clinical exposure that allowed me to decide which area of medicine I wanted to focus on. Hormones may be leveraged to treat and prevent signs of aging such as wrinkles and hair graying, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society journal Endocrine Reviews. Until now, only a limited number of hormones, mainly topical retinoids (retinol and tretinoin) and estrogen which is typically used to treat side effects of menopause, have been used in clinical practice as anti-skin aging compounds. This study reviews a new class of hormones and their anti-aging properties.

Olfactive Biosolutions was recently granted a third patent for inducing the secretion of GLP-1 and GIP, in U.S. patent US 12,171,727 B1 dated Dec. 24, 2024, Compositions and Methods for Treating Endocrine Diseases and Disorders. The patent specifically relates to oral formulations of natural food molecules for treating diabetes mellitus and obesity by modulating ectopic olfactory, taste and related receptor activity.

Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) announced the appointment of Matthew T. Drake, MD, PhD, as chief of the Division of Endocrinology and director of the Metabolic Bone Service. Drake has been a consultant in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, Metabolism, and Nutrition at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., since 2007. He assumed a dual role as a consultant in Mayo Clinic’s Division of Hematology in 2017.

Researchers have provided vital insights into social determinants such as government support, stable housing, and employment opportunities on postpartum health among Louisiana mothers during stressful periods including COVID-19, hurricanes, and the infant formula shortage. The study, “The role of government assistance, housing, and employment on postpartum maternal health across income and race: a mixed methods study,” was published in BMC Public Health.
