No wagons waited in Indianola. No food, no supplies, no shelter, no guides, no oxen to pull the nonexistent wagons. No nothing. The year was 1844. Stranded on the shingle shore were a motley gaggle of second sons, reprobates, poor relations, failed merchants, their dispirited wives, and unnerved offspring, all of whom had come to Texas for salvation. There was no chance for them, no living to be had in the assorted dukedoms and principalities of what would become a united Germany.

Providenciales, the most populous island in Turks and Caicos, seemed like the ideal destination for my goal: to do nothing but relax. Even before I arrived, I could envision the perfect trip. I would stroll stretches of the famous three-mile-long Grace Bay Beach, the shining highlight of Provo (as the locals call Providenciales). In 2022, Grace Bay was voted the in the world at Tripadvisor.

Some travels are a fever dream in which you can’t be sure which parts are real or fantasy. A cruise through the Seychelles, then to Zanzibar, Lamu, and Mombasa, is that way, except every bit of it is genuine—the giant tortoises, the ancient Portuguese forts, the spontaneous percussion-powered singing sessions at roadside rest stops, the veiled women in narrow-alley markets, the multi-colored angelfish as big as dinner plates.
