The defending NFC champion Eagles fly in to Foxborough this Sunday to kick off the 2023 season. It should be an absolutely electric atmosphere at Gillette, with Tom Brady in the house and the new massive scoreboard in place to serve as a sound wall and keep all the noise inside the stadium. But how much will the Pats give the fans to cheer for? Do we really have any idea yet?

From now until the middle of February, there is NFL football each and every week. Oh, how sweet that is. The 2023 season kicks off Thursday night when the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs host the Detroit Lions, who believe it or not have the 9th-best odds to win Super Bowl LVIII. To no surprise, the two teams that met in Super Bowl 57 last February are the favorites to get back there in the Chiefs (+600) and the Eagles (+750), according to Caesar's Sportsbook.

Ernie Clark is back for another year of Ernesto's Surefire Prognostications each Friday during the fall on The Drive, and this year we (Ernie) had the brilliant idea to put it on the website for all to see as you make your way to the games across the state. Don't forget, Ticket TV has its first Friday Night Football contest of the year at 7 p.m. with Jim Churchill and Ernie on the call of Brewer vs. Hermon for the Witches and Hawks first-ever meeting on the gridiron.

The New England Patriots are certainly all-in on Mac Jones, because the picture behind the QB1 is getting murkier each day. As of the NFL's cut day deadline, Mac was the only QB left standing in Foxborough as Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham were both waived. After none of the other teams bothered to place a claim on either player, they returned to the Patriots practice squad.

Since Bill Belichick returned to Foxborough in January of 2000 to be the New England Patriots head coach, the motto in the building has always been: Do Your Job. Ask Bill anything to do with his duties and he's most likely respond with "my job is to do whatever is in the best interest of this football team."For 20 years, it worked gloriously. Lately, though? Not as smooth. The dust has settled in the NFL following Tuesday's cut day, and the Pats initial 53-man roster caught some people off guard.

It's the poll question that keeps on giving. I guess that's one of the positives of following a wildly erratic baseball team, that I can ask basically the same question in the form of the Drive Poll at many different junctures throughout the season. One minute, they look like a team capable of "catching lightning in a bottle" and contending. Then, as quickly as they turned it on, they hit the skids and drop a few series in a row.

The deadline to get down to a 53-man roster in the NFL is tomorrow at 4 p.m.Bill Belichick got a jump start on some of that work yesterday, making double-digit cuts following New England's listless preseason final in Tennessee on Friday night, leaving the team with 25 cuts to make. How many receivers will they keep? Who is the 3rd running back behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott? Who is this team's kicker? Mookie Betts returns to Fenway Park for the first time as a visitor this weekend as the Dodgers, also known as Red Sox-west, come to town. Betts is in the midst of yet another incredible season. As of publication, Betts is 3-3 with a run scored today in L.A.'s game at Cleveland.
