Henry Ford once famously boasted folks could buy any color Model T they wanted, so long as it was black. We’ve progressed somewhat since then, now a buyer can have any color, or shade, of gray they desire. For Toyota, the newest shade is Cement. Not exactly a color I’ve ever considered a color, or something I’d want on anything but my driveway.

Not often does my wife declare her desire to own one of the 50 or so test vehicles I drive in a year, but that changed this week with the Genesis GV60, a spiffy crossover EV. It didn’t hurt that the new GV60 was the top-line Performance AWD model bathed in a beautiful silvery blue paint scheme that shimmered in our driveway. The brilliant color is known as Hanauma (a Hawaiian by) Mint and adds $650 to the bottom line.

Rare is my chance to test two cars back-to-back that are so similar in size and function. But this week’s peppy Honda Civic Hatchback Hybrid Sport (car names just keep expanding) rides on a similar wheelbase to last week’s stylish Kia K4. Dimensionally, they are near clones, and both with fastback profiles. The major difference, the Civic is a hybrid, so excels at stretching a tank of gas. To settle that score, the Civic hatchback rocked, delivering 54 mpg in a mix of city and highway driving.

In a crossover crazy world, a stylish sedan is as refreshing, and rare, as a warm spring day in Wisconsin. Thank you, Kia. First, the new K4 compact sedan looks great with a fastback profile, expressive nose and shapely headlights. Second, the ride is superior to most compact sedans and crossovers. Third, the interior stands out like a rose among weeds. Fourth, power is good while also being efficient. And fifth … wait for it … the K4 is extremely affordable.

Aging, after a certain point, is a process of slowing down, synapsis engaging more like a well-chilled jar of honey flows. While we remember faster earlier times, if we’re honest with ourselves (something that comes easier with age) we can admit that neck-straining speed is for the young, those with faster reflexes and more toned abs and glutes.
