Authorities in Louisiana have made arrests related to what investigators are calling a multimillion-dollar staged crash scheme. According to a news release from Louisiana State Police, an investigation led to the arrests of Justin Ledet, 45; Steven Thomas, 38; and Alfred Onezine, 37. The investigation began in March after Louisiana State Police received a criminal complaint from the Louisiana Department of Insurance following a report from a trucking company.

Several groups related to the trucking industry are asking the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to modernize its National Consumer Complaint Database. The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association told lawmakers earlier this year that the systems should be overhauled. Additionally, the American Trucking Associations, Truck Safety Coalition, Transportation Intermediaries Association and Small Business in Transportation Coalition recently filed comments asking for improvements.

As lawmakers begin to draft the next highway bill, representatives of large carriers will certainly be pushing for the inclusion of provisions to increase truck weight limits. The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks is pushing back, saying that bigger and heavier trucks are more likely to crash and will shorten the lifespan of the nation’s roads and bridges.

A former Florida Highway Patrol chief was nominated in March to lead the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Derek Barrs, who has more than three decades of experience in law enforcement, is in line to be the FMCSA’s next administrator. If confirmed, Barrs would be the agency’s first permanent administrator since Robin Hutcheson resigned in 2024.
