Britain has suffered double the number of “nationally significant” cyberattacks in recent months compared with the year before, according to GCHQ. Richard Horne, chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), said that the GCHQ unit has managed 200 cyberattacks since September, which includes “twice as many nationally significant incidents as the same period last year”.

Britain has taken a step towards a future without passwords after the government approved passkeys for use across its services and in Whitehall. Passkeys replace passwords with a unique digital key for each login that is tied to specific devices, such as a phone or a laptop, and are set up using biometrics such as facial recognition or fingerprints. Cybersecurity experts have been encouraging their use to thwart hackers who prey on the weakness of passwords.

Oxford researchers have called for tighter controls on AI deepfake image generators after they found tens of thousands of the programs easily available to download. On one platform alone, academics discovered 35,000 generators have been downloaded almost 15 million times since late 2022. Users can simply type in text to the generators to create a fake and explicit image.
