I retired as editor of this publication a year ago, and although I miss the writers and editors I worked with for many years — and the pleasures (and challenges) of communicating with readers — I was ready to hang up my editing spurs. I worked a year longer than I’d planned. Working an extra year or two is good advice if you have any doubts about how prepared you are for retirement, either financially or psychologically.

Q: Will the IRS be offering free tax prep soon? A: The IRS is set to launch a free tax-filing pilot program in 2024. IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel announced the upcoming pilot program, Direct File, after the IRS unveiled a study saying an IRS income tax return filing platform is feasible. The IRS already has a free filing program, allowing people who make less than $73,000 annually (as of tax year 2022) to file their federal tax return for free.
