It was a big day for Erie Bishop Dwane Brock's Eagle's Nest. The East-Erie school now has a brand-new, 3.4 million dollar athletic center. The Eagle's Nest school opened in 2019, they now have about 130 students in grades 5 through 8. Now those kids, and so many others are gonna have a chance to play basketball, volleyball, pickleball, wrestling, and even the jump rope game double dutch. It's just the latest addition to a spot that's really transformed this East-Erie neighborhood.

A big announcement came on Tuesday from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.. The covid vaccine's no longer recommended for healthy kids and pregnant women. The move's not sitting well with some infectious disease experts, including Dr. Becky Dawson. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been an anti-vaccine advocate for years before becoming Health Secretary, said the annual covid booster shots have been recommended for kids, "despite the lack of any clinical data".

The First Warning forecast doesn't exactly scream "Let's go to the beach", but the swimming season at Presque Isle State Park officially opens on Saturday. Park officials tell Erie News Now they plan to have Beaches 3,6,8, and 11 open for swimming from noon to 7:15pm over the weekend. Of course, that means they'll have lifeguards in place there. Swimming's technically only allowed on those guarded beaches. Lifeguard Manager Bob North said his team's been training ahead of the summer season.

Erie County Elections officials are busy preparing for Tuesday's Primary. Even with a switch to a new mail-in ballot vendor, they said they're about as ready as they can be. Erie County Director of Elections, Tonia Fernandez is a woman on the move, as we count down to Tuesday's May Primary. She's in charge of making sure things go smoothly at all of Erie County's 149-polling stations, that requires about 900-poll workers, something Fernandez said has been a struggle in recent years.

Saturday's shooting in Butler, Pa., has already led to some changes in how the Erie Police Department is preparing for the run-up to the election. One of the department's main concerns is making sure local politicians and candidates are safe. State lawmakers from both sides of the political aisle on Monday held a news conference in downtown Erie's Perry Square. The event came with an added police presence, with extra officers stationed around the perimeter.
