Helena Makes Landfall in Florida

Hurricane Helene has made landfall in Florida. It remains a Category 4 hurricane as it hits near Perry, about 50 miles east of Tallahassee. It has maximum sustained winds of 140 miles-per-hours. The potential storm surge from Helene is being described as "un-survivable" as it could reach as high as 20 feet in some areas.

Hurricane Helene Update 5:00am Thursday

At 5:00 AM, the center of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 24.2 North, longitude 86.2 West. Helene is moving toward the north-northeast near 12 mph (19 km/h). This general motion is expected to continued with a significant increase in forward speed during the next 24 hours. On the forecast track, Helene will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico today and cross the Florida Big Bend coast this evening or early Friday morning.
Henderson County Opens Shelter Ahead of Hurricane Helene

Many counties across Western North Carolina are working to get ahead of any trouble that Hurricane Helene may bring to the area. Henderson County is no different. Officials there have taken steps to open up a shelter for those that may need it. Henderson County will be opening an emergency shelter at our Athletics and Activities Center located at 708 South Grove Street, Hendersonville NC. The shelter will open at 12:00pm today and will remain open until it is safe for residents to return home.

At 5:00 PM, the eye of Hurricane Helene was located near latitude 27.9 North, longitude 84.6 West. Helene is moving toward the north-northeast near 23 mph (37 km/h). A continued fast motion to the north-northeast is expected through landfall in the Florida Big Bend this evening. After landfall, Helene is expected to turn northwestward and slow down over the Tennessee Valley on Friday and Saturday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 125 mph (205 km/h) with higher gusts.
