    Tuesday, May 13, 2025Markets traded mostly higher today, with the S&P 500, Nasdaq and small-cap Russell 2000 all notching higher for the third time in the past four sessions. Only the blue-chip Dow stayed in the red all trading day, with a massive -17.8% drop in one of its top components, UnitedHealthcare UNH. The Dow closed down -269 points, -0.64%, while the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Russell 2000 gained +0.72%, +1,61% and +0.49%, respectively.

With the surprise stepping-down of UnitedHealthcare UNH CEO Andrew Witty for “personal reasons,” effective immediately, the Dow component helped move the index -135 points at this hour. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq, on the other hand, are +5 points and +55 points, respectively — both off early-morning highs.

    Monday, May 12, 2025Markets posted one of its strongest sessions of 2025 so far. We’ve had a volatile first half of the year, and we might expect that volatility to continue. But with all the ups and downs, today’s big day into the green has brought the S&P 500 within 5% of its all-time trading high. The Dow and S&P 500 are within 1% of posting profits year to date. The Dow shot up 1160 points today, for a +2.81% gain — and it was the laggard among the major indexes.
