Brandon Bell manages his Type 1 diabetes the same way he prepares for each race – one step at a time. The Paul VI High School sophomore distance runner has been dealing with the disease since he was 11. At that time, he was running for Holy Angels Catholic School in Woodbury. Several locations in South Philly will help discard those potentially dangerous substances during Prescription Drug Take-Back Day initiative on April 26. The DEA has offered National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day since 2010 with the goal of fighting prescription drug misuse by creating convenient ways to dispose of medication that could otherwise be misused.

State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler presented local organization BAKERHOOPS with a $50,000 check on March 26 from the Department of Education. The funding will help BAKERHOOPS strengthen its services, which includes basketball training along with mentorship, career and emotional support for Philly youth. “Local programs like BAKERHOOPS are so important for keeping our kids active, safe and engaged,” Fiedler said.

Eugene Desyatnik has watched the horrors of war and destruction unfold from afar. The Bella Vista resident lived in Ukraine until he was 11 years old before moving to the United States. “I grew up in Zaporizhzhia, which was one of the places of the nuclear reactors that was getting bombed,” Desyatnik said. “My family had all moved away but I have friends there that sent my mom pictures and buildings are no longer there. Scientifically speaking, there’s a good chance that the next great scientist could have some strong ties to South Philly’s Grays Ferry neighborhood. Universal Audenried Charter School on Tasker Street recently celebrated multiple awards at the George Washington Carver Science Fair last month. Award winners ranged in fields of environmental science, zoology and medicine and health. Each student related their project’s inspiration to something close to their personal lives.
