A self-deprecating tale of dog-ownership mayhem that is sure to win over many a reader. In his first work of nonfiction, Zusak, the Australian author of the novels The Book Thief and The Messenger, offers a glimpse of his private life in Sydney, where his family has lived in thrall, as he would tell it, to the parade of highly idiosyncratic animals that have shared their home.

To sum it up in one world chaos. In the opening pages the author is having trouble with his dog, Frosty. Zusak had tried to negotiate the signal controlled pedestrian crossing, but Frosty had other ideas. Frosty is intent on charging into the dogs walking towards him. Eventually, after two attempts to cross the road, Zucak scolds Frosty for his misbehaviour and they continue walking to the park. Continuing, the reader is taken to the beginning of the 2000s.
