    Two candidates — Conservative and Liberal — plus 150 people filled the room with questions and answers at the Buckhorn Community Centre during the All Candidates Meeting, April 14, organized by the Buckhorn Ratepayers Meeting. This writer chaired and organized the event. I welcomed everyone as new members of the Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes Riding and introduced the moderator, Mayor Terry Lambshead, who reviewed the format and introduced the candidates.

    Looking for a way to volunteer in your community? Many important organizations serving the community were represented at the ovlunteer luncheon at the Buckhorn Community CentreBuckhorn Community Care was represented by Caylea Smith, Community Development coordinator at the Buckhorn office. Community Care could use your volunteer energy to do drives for clients, deliver groceries, perform home maintenance tasks, or provide support at reception and in the office.

    It all started last August when annuals were ordered for the 2025 season. Many of those annuals came from Ontario as do many perennials, though some are from B.C. Some, like the Dixons’ perennials, grow from bare root. Doug and Wendy Dixon, Erin Dixon and Travis Hunt are working away getting the annual plugs planted into the cells of four or six. With a special tool, they poke the plugs out of the plug trays. The cells are their next destination but first those cells must be filled with soil.

    The passion for woodcarving continues at the Buckhorn Community Centre. Every Thursday, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., you will find dedicated carvers honing their skills. The group started because of a talented master carver, Bob Gill, a teacher and leader. With his passing, the group continued with usually 12 to 14 carvers participating. Master carver Dave Loucks is an important part of this process. A carver for 30 years, he has the capabilities and skills to teach.

    Community Care Buckhorn continues to offer many community services including a monthly chance to gather with fellow community members to chat, snack and learn through invited speakers. They meet in Hartley Hall at St. Matthews/St. Aidans on the third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m.Next month, they meet April 15 at 10 a.m. Their speaker will be addressing the issue of stress and sleep, providing tips on how to get a good night’s sleep, common signs of a sleep disorder and managing stress.
