After all, who wouldn't be charmed by seven endearing kids and an energetic, lovable governess who sing and dance their way through Salzburg? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences agreed with the public. In 1966, the members nominated The Sound of Music for 10 Academy Awards. It won five, including Best Picture.

    One of the best aspects of travel is stumbling on interesting stories. I discovered one highlighting Native American history during a photography tour of Antelope Canyon X with Taadidiin Tours. Antelope Canyon X is one of several slot canyons that inspire millions to visit the Navajo Nation near Page, Arizona, each year. We enjoyed seeing Antelope Canyon X and got some marvelous photos.

    The city of Düsseldorf, on the Rhine north of Frankfurt, normally doesn’t come up when beer aficionadosdiscuss where to find great German breweries. During a recent trip, I learned why it should. Düsseldorf is the home of Altbier, or “old beer” in German. Altbier is a dark ale with a distinctive copper color and a hint of fruitiness. It’s produced using recipes and methods that are hundreds of years old.

    Every spring, my parents planned where we'd go on our summer vacation. They'd pour over maps and brochures for hours while we anxiously waited to hear what our destination would be. One year it was Gettysburg and Washington D.C. The next year, we went to the Great Smokey Mountains. I can't understand why we never went to Yosemite National Park since there are so many fun activities for families.
