Dupont Circle, the iconic center of D.C.’s historic gay neighborhood and a popular weekend gathering spot, will be closed to the public starting on Friday, ahead of the WorldPride Parade set to take place on Saturday. The closure – ordered by the National Park Service – will last through Sunday.

You wouldn’t expect a British monarch who died 311 years to factor into the proposed D.C. budget for 2026, yet she does – and in ways that could be consequential to the city’s sports betting industry. A brief provision buried in a 300-page budget bill submitted last week by Mayor Muriel Bowser seeks to amend an existing city law known as the Statute of Anne – as in, Queen Anne of Great Britain. The law, which dates back to 1710, makes it illegal to lose any more than $25 in a game of chance.

On Tuesday Mayor Muriel Bowser unveiled her long-delayed proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year, along with a revised and slimmed-down budget for the current year. Both spending plans were eagerly anticipated, largely because they come as the city is facing financial headwinds and forced to cut back spending significantly – something that’s alien to many elected officials used to the steady increases in annual revenues over the past decade.

It was five years ago that Mayor Muriel Bowser called D.C. a "proud sanctuary city," but now she’s trying to scrub the designation and protections it offers some immigrants. As part of her proposed budget for 2026, Bowser is pushing to repeal a 2019 law that limits how and when city agencies – notably the Department of Corrections and Metropolitan Police Department – can cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts.
