Lamborghinis and other luxury cars bought with the proceeds of crime are being driven abroad to be sold, the National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned ministers. The agency said a gap in the law meant police officers could not intervene to seize the vehicles unless there was direct evidence to link them to a crime. It said the loophole meant criminals were being left free to launder their illicit gains by selling the cars and using the proceeds to either fund further crime or their lifestyles.

Britain’s “FBI” has warned the Sentencing Council that its guidelines are letting off money launderers too lightly. It also wants the council to encourage greater use of expert witnesses to ensure that the complexities of modern money-laundering methods and the roles of individual offenders within networks are fully understood by judges. The NCA's concerns about the Sentencing Council's approach emerged during research for a forthcoming report by the campaign group Spotlight of Corruption into the effectiveness of the Government's asset recovery efforts.
