PC Trevor Lock, a hero of the famous Iranian embassy siege in London, has died at the age of 85. The Metropolitan Police bobby had only recently opted for what he thought would be a quieter life as a member of the diplomatic protection squad in April 1980, when he and others were taken hostage by terrorists in a six-day stand-off that ended with the dramatic storming of the building by the Special Air Service (SAS).

An illegal immigrant, who came to the UK on a small boat, was helping to smuggle more than 1,000 others into Europe within a month, a court was told. Ahmed Ramadan Mohamad Ebid, an Egyptian, was said to have played a "vital" role from his west London home in a £12m operation to get migrants from North Africa to southern Italy. Ebid, who had worked as a fisherman in the Mediterranean, was in regular phone contact with those on the boats as they crossed the sea, said prosecutor Freddy Hookway.

A judge trying to assess how much money conman Mark Acklom has made in his criminal career told the fraudster he did not "have it in" for him. Acklom, 51, who was jailed for five years for a notorious romance scam, claimed the judge was biased against him and should be replaced. Judge Martin Picton, who jailed Acklom in 2019, refused to stand down and after more than two hours of legal argument adjourned the case for a new two-day hearing at Bristol Crown Court.

Acklom, who was freed after serving less than half his sentence, listened in to the session from Spain where he lives with his family, but did not contribute.
