Jobe Bellingham has completed his transfer from Sunderland to Borussia Dortmund for an initial fee of about £27.5million to follow in the career path of his big brother Jude. The 19-year-old has become the second most expensive player in Dortmund’s history, second only to the £30million they paid for Ousmane Dembélé in 2016. It is also more than the £25million they paid Birmingham City for a 17-year-old in 2020.

Michael Carrick has been sacked by Middlesbrough after 2½ years as head coach at the Championship club. The 43-year-old is believed to have known his time in charge at the Riverside Stadium was coming to an end on Tuesday night and his exit was confirmed on Wednesday. The Middlesbrough owner and chairman Steve Gibson attended a meeting with Carrick at the club’s Hurworth training ground. Gibson had been eager for Carrick, who was appointed in October 2022, to succeed.

Paul Mitchell agreed to leave his role as Newcastle United's sporting director on Tuesday morning, two months after first informing Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund that he was considering his position. He is departing the club by "mutual consent". The Newcastle chief executive, Darren Eales, will also leave his position at St James' Park next month. Eales has a chronic form of blood cancer.
