Every few seconds, our visual world disappears behind a thin fold of skin that maintains the tear film on the corneal surface and, for more than a tenth of a second, blocks light from falling onto the retina. “Blink and you miss it” is a common idiom that captures how we have conceived of those moments in time. A new study (1) now turns this idea on its head, showing that the transients caused by blinks effectively enhance visual contrast sensitivity.

William “Ian” Jones was born in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, and studied medicine in Cardiff. He did two years of national service in Singapore, where his biggest challenge was the vaccination programme that followed an outbreak of smallpox. His career in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) medicine began under the guidance of Don Harrison at the Royal National Throat, Nose, and Ear Hospital, where he earned his fellowship in 1964.
