Syria in the Fertile Crescent

In 2015, I gave a lecture on the deeper historical background to the civil war in Syria, and I published it in my 2016 book The War on Error. Under present circumstances, it seems as relevant as ever, and I wouldn’t change a word. When the revolution (or uprising, or insurgency) started in Syria in 2011, many people saw it as the obvious continuation of the so-called Arab Spring. There had been revolutions in Tunisia, then Egypt and Libya—countries with Mediterranean shorelines.

Some years ago, I purchased a delightful 1924 poster at auction, advertising a performance of Verdi’s opera Aida by the Eretz-Israel (Palestine) Opera in Tel Aviv. The date of the performance? In België hebben oplichters QR-codes op parkeerautomaten geplakt die leidden naar een frauduleuze website waar bestuurders hun bankkaartgegevens moesten invoeren. Deze vorm van oplichting wordt ook wel QR-codefraude of ‘qhishing’ genoemd. Het is belangrijk dat mensen zich ervan bewust zijn dat cybercriminelen QR-codes op deze manier kunnen gebruiken. Zeker nu ze de QR-code steeds meer in het dagelijks leven tegenkomen.

This past Sukkot holiday marked an important anniversary for the National Library of Israel and the study of Islam in Israel. A century ago, the Hebrew University opened a prized acquisition to the Jerusalem public: the 6,000-volume private library of Ignaz (Isaac Jehuda) Goldziher, the Jewish-Hungarian scholar of Islam. The books had been transported from Budapest, after lengthy negotiations and at some cost.

The migration of historian Bernard Lewis from London to Princeton, and from Britain to America, changed the lives of many students, myself included.

Op social media zijn afbeeldingen van Taylor Swift verspreid die suggereren dat ze Donald Trump steunt. De afbeeldingen zijn door het campagneteam van Trump gemaakt met behulp van kunstmatige intelligentie zonder dat Swift hiervan wist. Bovendien heeft ze zich nog helemaal niet uitgesproken over welke presidentskandidaat ze steunt. Dit soort deepfakes, in de vorm van afbeeldingen of video’s, komen steeds vaker voor.
